Where Champions Begin

Why families choose Olympia Fencing Center for fitness, focus, and lifelong skills

April 15, 2026

Tucked away in one of Cambridge’s lesser-known neighborhoods amid industrial buildings on a quiet dead-end street Olympia Fencing Center was founded in 2012 as a modest salle with a simple mission: to introduce the equally unfamiliar sport of fencing to the local community.

What few people realize is how much the club has grown since then. Today, it stands as an elite training center that attracts both Olympians and complete beginners. Yet it remains proudly local, a place where parents bring their children not just to learn a sport, but to gain a truly life-enriching experience.

The club was founded by a 12-time Romanian épée champion and the father of a shy, non-athletic boy who disliked sports, especially running. With that perspective in mind, the curriculum was designed to emphasize learning through team-building games, while developing skills through leadership, example, and inspiration.

Years later, that same boy who first picked up fencing at age nine became a Junior Olympic Champion at 17 and an NCAA Champion at 19. Today, he can often be seen running at nearby Fresh Pond, training for the 2028 Olympics.

He is far from alone. Many of his peers from the club have reached the highest levels of fencing, earned admission to top universities, and brought home numerous national and international titles including an Olympic medal.

Unlike many athletic programs that prioritize raw speed or size, fencing is a sport for everyone: boys and girls, tall and short, strong and slight, young and old alike.

It offers a rare combination of lifelong benefits:

  • Physical: Fencing builds agility, coordination, balance, and cardiovascular fitness through dynamic footwork and precise blade work.
  • Mental: Often described as “physical chess,” it demands rapid decision-making, strategic thinking, and adaptability under pressure—skills that translate into stronger academic focus and greater emotional resilience.
  • Social: The sport fosters respect, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Training partners become mentors and friends, while competition cultivates humility in victory and composure in defeat.

Olympia Fencing Center has earned widespread recognition, including the US Fencing Association’s Club of Excellence Award (2017) and President’s Award (2019). It has also been voted Boston Parents Paper’s “Best of the Best” children’s activity every year since 2014.

The coaching team is composed of world-class instructors who are SafeSport- and CORI-certified, ensuring a safe, supportive environment where fencing remains both fun and accessible.

Students can choose between recreational and competitive paths, with flexible class schedules to accommodate busy families. Memberships are offered on a month-to-month basis, and fencing equipment is available for rent or purchase on-site.

In a landscape filled with extracurricular options, Olympia Fencing Center stands apart, a place where excellence, inclusivity, safety, and personal growth come together.

Families don’t simply enroll their children in a sport; they invest in an experience that strengthens both body and mind, helping young people thrive now and for years to come.
